Coughing is a common health problem that all parents have to face because coughing can happen to children of all ages and genders. There are many types of coughing. The most common cause is a cold, especially during times when the weather changes frequently. Young children are more likely to catch a cold and cough very easily.

A productive cough is a common illness that causes children to cough up thick mucus in their throat. It can be colorless or white, yellow, green, or brown. Children will cough and make a sound like there is something stuck in their airways and may choke on the mucus in their mouth. Children may also have other symptoms, depending on the cause of the illness.

When your child coughs up phlegm, parents can take care of their child in the  following ways :

Drink water to moisten your throat. An easy way to relieve a child’s cough is to give your child warm water to sip to increase moisture and reduce irritation. Eliminate allergens. Parents should clean their home and bedding regularly to prevent the accumulation of dust, pollen, and other pollutants that can trigger allergies and asthma. They may also use an air purifier in the home, especially in children’s bedrooms, which will help trap dust and filter the air to make it cleaner.

Give your child medicine. In case your child has a severe cough, parents can give their child cough suppressants and expectorants for children, which can be in liquid or tablet form. However, it must be prescrib by a medical professional for the safety and good health of the child.
